Enjoy Dartmoor this summer

Here at Holne Chase holiday cottages are fortunate enough to be situated within the beautiful surroundings of Dartmoor National Park.  It makes our holiday cottages the perfect base to explore many local attractions, the countryside, history and shops of Devon.  Here are just a few suggestions of what you can see and do when staying with us this Summer.

Chagford Show

Holne Chase is situated close to the ancient stannary town of Chagford, which comes to life in August with its annual country show.  This year visitors to our Dartmoor holiday cottages will be able to enjoy the shows two main spectacular events.

The first, a motorcycle display team 'The Imps' with an unmissable display of discipline and skill, especially from their youngest performer who is only 5 years old!

Then Bob Hogg and his Sheepdogs take over the show to dazzle the audiences with entertaining displays of how to round up sheep, geese and ducks along with this year's new addition - Paxo the chicken!!!

As usual the Chagford Show is a brilliant day out for all the family when holiday in Dartmoor, with over 100 country attractions including horse jumping, dog shows, food stalls, vintage cars and tractors on show, a hog roast, children’s races, a beer tent offering a variety of different ciders and ales and last but not least Morris dancing!  The show is being held on Thursday 16th August with adult tickets are priced at £7.50, children’s at £2.50, with any child under the age of 5 going free.  For more information about getting there and what’s on, why not visit their website http://www.chagfordshow.com/ and take part in this fantastic annual country show. 

Spend August with the National Trust

The National Trust is putting on a variety of different events at Castle Drogo throughout August and early September.  So whether you fancy a game of croquet, joining in on an old school sports day, celebrating British food fortnight or getting your hands dirty on ‘Wild Wednesday’ with activities including clay modeling, wild mask making and butterfly craft, this imposing medieval fortress has something for everyone enjoying a holiday in Devon.  Phone for details of specific activities each day.  Normal admission prices apply with an additional £2 for adults/children taking part in any activities which run from 11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm

Moretonhampstead Carnival

On Thursday the 23rd of August, Moretonhampstead will be showcasing their 87th carnival procession.  With around 80 entries this year, this vibrant and colourful event draws in the crowds and has people lining the streets of the ancient market town. There is always a great atmosphere and this year there will be music in the Square and a variety of dancing on display from jazz to hip-hop.  It’s a great day for locals and visitors alike with food stalls and pubs throwing their doors open to everyone, even the hundreds of people bearing painted faces! While staying at one of Holne Chase's holiday cottages, and if you fancy something a bit different, why not head down and soak up the carnival atmosphere?
